It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?
My Rating:4/5 stars
In This is Not a Test Courtney Summers explores a topic that’s never really been discussed before in these type of novels: what happens if you don’t want to survive? The main character Sloane is really depressed and was contemplating suicide right up until the zombie apocalypse began. She finds herself teaming up with six other people and they wind up in a school, trying to get away from the zombies. Throughout this entire novel, Sloane is really detached from the whole situation, and doesn’t really care about surviving at all but at the same time she doesn’t want to endanger her companions. This Is Not a Test is not really a book about zombies but a book about people and the way they are wired. I really enjoyed this book despite the fact that I hate zombies because it really doesn’t read a apocalyptic story but as a book about six teenagers stuck together with the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse. If you’re looking for a quickly paced book then this book isn’t for you but if you’re looking for something fresh and raw then I’d highly recommend it.
So Sloane is stuck with five other people in this school:Grace,Rhys,Trace,Grace,Cary and Harrison.Trace and Grace are twins but the other four really have nothing in common and don’t know each other too well. One of the main issues in this stories is the fact that not all the characters get along which creates a division which leads a lot of people not trusting one another. Overall I felt kind of indifferent about the characters, while we did get to see some parts of their personality it was hard for me to truly appreciate them. I feel like a lot of them did things that didn’t really fit their personality so it left me kind of confused as to who they are. There were also some weird romantic plotlines which I just really didn’t like and it just felt really forced and unecessary. So overall I liked the characters but I didn’t really love them which is why the book’s more of a 4 stars than a 5 stars.
